will do after i try it -:) it still seems like a hack, though I was hoping for a lower-level way to disable a UPM module somehow

Oh, it's totally a hack. :) But unfortunately I don't think it can be removed gracefully. I would be careful trying to turn off stuff with the UPM. It's pretty important to the system. Even if you could turn off just that one thing I wouldn't try it.
