For server hosted clients they can use the sourcecode editor but this option is not available to cloud users
Seem to have found a slightly less extreme way by switching the text to preformatted (CMD + 7) then back to the desired style seems to strip out the spans.
Makes sense as having styled preformatted text doesnt really work so guess it strips the span when you apply that style!

If there are unwanted HTML elements in your content, the easiest way to remove them in Confluence Cloud is probably to copy the content into Notepad (which will strip out formatting and hidden layout items) and then back into Confluence as plain text.
