How to reference a variable value in confluence cloud template?

I am creating a template in Confluence Cloud - and I want to use a variable value elsewhere in the page template i.e.: a subsection title.

What is the proper syntax?

The docs say to type $ and press enter - and supposedly confluence shows a list of variables. This may may work in confluence server but its not working for me in confluence cloud.

When I press enter it simply creates a newline. 

Any suggestions please
