How to use the SettingsManager inside user-macro?

Hi, so my goal is to retrive the language set in the userprofile. As to my understanding of the documentation on https://docs.atlassian.com/atlassian-confluence/6.6.0/index.html?com/atlassian/confluence/util/velocity/VelocityUtils.html it should be possible. 

But using the following inside a macro just writes it on the page.

$getGlobalSettings()

But it would also help to have an actual dokumentation.
