I created a template with variables but why don't they show up on a page?

I created a template with variables but once I create a page from the template, the variables disappear.  I found some reports of people have the same issue, but not a real solution yet.  Is there some setting or permission that I have missed?  The process seems pretty simple.

In addition, I've tried my self and works just fine! Pay attention to the message:

This template uses variables. Once you fill them in, the information you supply will become part of the content in your new page.

P.S. There is a "g" in Berlin. Don't mind that :D
