Importing a Confluence Extract from Self-Hosted 6.1 to Web 6.1

We are taking over a Product from another company (who self-hosts Confluence 6.1) and they did an extract for us to import into OUR Confluence e( we use Web, but ALSO 6.1). For some reason, we can get the main page to import, but any links open into a generic "outline" page (draft view, almost - without the actual content)... I know I am not technical, so I am probably not giving enough info, but... thoughts?

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for contacting us about this. Happy to help!

I understand that you're attempting to migrate some or all of the data from a Confluence 6.1 instance. It's not clear to me exactly what version of Confluence you're trying to import the data into.

Can you help me to understand the following?

  1. What are you attempting to import from Confluence 6.1? Is this a full site export, or a single space?
  2. What exactly is the version of Confluence you're running? When you mentioned "Confluence Web", I believe you may have a Confluence Cloud site, but you mentioned that you're on version 6.1, which is not possible if you are on Cloud.
  3. For the links that are breaking on your imports, where are they supposed to point? Is it another page within that space, or another page in their Confluence instance?

Thank you for your help!
Regards,

Shannon

We are taking an export file from another business that was using self-hosted server 6.1.3

We have a cloud instance which refuses to import the file because it is not compatible.

So what we did was to download a trial copy of Confluence server and then hope to import directly to that as a temporary solution. The export file is a single space as far as I can tell.

We are trying to find a way to get documentation from another business and import it into our fresh install of confluence. They cannot provide all of their internal documentation but they are willing to give us a specific space with some relevant content. We aren't sure of the best way to get part of their system imported into ours.

Hi Barry,

Thank you for confirming that.

The broken links in your space import might be referring to other pages within the Confluence instance and not the space itself. Could you have a look and see if that's the case? If so, it should prompt you to create an identically named page within your Confluence site.

If they refer to a page within the space you imported, can you confirm if those pages exist, or if their permissions are locked down? See Page Restrictions for information on how to view all page restrictions and remove them if necessary.

One note; it's possible to migrate from 6.1.3 to Cloud directly using the Cloud Migration Assistant. It's compatible with Server versions 5.10 to 6.12. To use this, you do need access to the original Server instance. I understand that is not possible for you, but I wanted to mention it here in case anyone else comes across this issue in the future.

Regards,

Shannon
