Importing a Word Document with Table of Contents

Bob Whitty May 31, 2019

I've been trying to import some Word documents that have Table of Contents into Confluence. When I do complete the import, the table of contents for any given document is useless since the entries in the TOC are no longer indexed within the document.

Suggestions on retaining the internal document indexing? These documents are hundreds of pages long and will be pretty useless without the ability to go to directly to the desired portion of the document.

Thank You Folks!

Hello there!
Bob, currently this is not a feature natively available for Confluence, both Cloud and Server. You can check the suggestion for Confluence server and Cloud here Bob:

A possible workaround is to Insert A Table Of Contents Macro in the Confluence page after if finishes importing from the Word file. I would do it like this:

  1. Remove the table of contents from the Word File
  2. Import the Word file into Confluence
  3. Insert the Table of Content Macro
  4. Publish the page

Here we have more details on the ToC macro:

Let us know if this helps you Bob! Looking forward to your reply.
