Is it allowed to create 1 Confluence account for multiple people?

Julienne Mae Anito August 27, 2022

We are wondering if maybe it's alright to let multiple users login to 1 account? This shared account will be for guests incase they need to view what is inside our company's knowledge base. They will only be using the shared account for view-only access. Can we do that? What issues should we expect to encounter if any?

Strictly speaking, it's a simple no.

Technically, yes, you can do this.  Legally, you have problems

  • Your licence contract is per user, not per account
  • Shared accounts are illegal in most places, because of the security and privacy laws that they can easily (but not always) violate.
  • In many industries, it's an absolute requirement that you can identify who made a change.  You can't do that if it is a shared account.

Generally, though, most places won't worry about it much if it is read-only, and a read-only account won't have, or cause, any problems.

Actually it should not suggest for security and license law issue, although it's not easy to prevent the condition.

Hi @Julienne Mae Anito

This is possible, but it may raise security issues within your organization.  As long as your it team is ok, this should not cause any issues.
