Lookup of other confluence pages

Christian Christian February 20, 2012

In Confluence there is this fabulous feature to create links to other pages by using [ and start to type the name of the page you want to refer to.

Now if you do have 2 pages with the names

1) "MD-MM - Material Management" and

2) "MD-MM001 - Material Master"

and you try to link to 1) by typing "[MD-MM - Ma" it does show you the link and you can select it with the arrow keys.

But if you try to link to 2) by typing "[MD-MM001 - Ma" it does not show any result. You need to select "search for MD-MM001 - Ma" and then you manually need to select the page and then manually need to change the link text.

Is there any settings where this is controlled? I need to create links to tons of pages and if the functionality with "[" is not working it ends up with a looooot of work.

regs,

Christian

Hi Christian,

I'd raise a support ticket via support@atlassian.com to ask how Confluence indexes content with "-" in the page title. I tested with the examples you gave and the autocomplete works and displays both pages in the results if you just type "MD-" , but as soon as I entered the first "M" after the "-" it was only picking up the "MD-MM Material Management" entry. I also tried with other pages that had the same characters and numbers at the beginning, but did not have a "-" and autocomplete worked correctly for these pages. Finally, I tried testing with pages beginning with "MDA-" and got the same behaviour as for your pages so I think it's something to do with how Confluence tokenizes and indexes titles with a "-" in them, which you cannot control via the UI.

You can re-index Confluence via Browse -> Confluence Admin -> Content Indexing, but that's the only control you have via the UI.

Is just typing "MD-" a viable workaround or does that generate too many results in the suggested links dialog?

Andrew.

EDIT: I just tried with Quicknav search at the top right hand of the screen as well and got the same behaviour with pages with a "-" in them, as soon as you enter "MD-M" you only get the "MD-MM - Material Management" page returned in the results.
