Personal space for different user

As a Admin we would like to

As admin, we have turned off creating spaces ourselves. We create this for the users on request.

Now comes a request that 1 of the users would like to have a personal space. Can we also create this for them ? And how ?

Hi all!

So I think that maybe @Ferry Portier has disabled Personal Spaces for users at the Global permissions level: https://support.atlassian.com/confluence-cloud/docs/manage-global-permissions/

So one way to grant access to a single user to have a Personal Space would be to create a "personal-space" group, grant that group permission to create a Personal Space, and then add any of these privileged users to that group.

BUT BEFORE YOU DO THAT - you should ask some WHYs.

  • WHY don't you allow personal spaces?
  • WHY does this user get a personal space?

These aren't technical questions. They're policy questions. They may lead to more questions:

  • Do people (or more likely leadership) understand what personal spaces are FOR?
  • Do corporate policies prohibit or discourage "unofficial" or "personal" content creation?
  • Have there been "bad" incidents before around personal spaces?
  • Would giving one person a personal space when nobody else can have them set a bad precedent? Create resentment?

We can't answer these questions for you. But I do have opinions about them.

Hi @Ferry Portier

There's a big gap (white space) in your question so I wonder if some content dropped out...

But anyway, by definition, every Confluence user has their own personal space.

If there's a user who, for whatever reason, doesn't have their own space, you can simply create a new space. A space is a space is a space...

Everything else is about permissions. You can make them the admin of their own space and set up permissions in such a way that only site admins and the user would see the space, etc.

Hi @Kristian Klima ,

My excuses for the 'blanks'.
First of all we've disabled for all the users to create a space. So now there's a user who wants a personal space. By logging in with the user credentials we don't see any choice to add an personal space.

Because I've ADMIN rights I can make a personal space (on my account /space).

As a Confluence Site admin, you should be able to create any number of spaces on that site.

And as a site admin, you can then tweak permissions of those spaces.

Of course, if you sign in with that user's credentials and they don't have permissions to create a space, you won't be able to create a space.

However, as a site admin, you simply create a space and then restrict permissions so only that one user can access it (if that's what is desired). For all intents and purpose, that would be that user's personal space.

On a side note... When a user is added to a Confluence site, they don't have to create their own space, they have one by default. A typical personal space created by default has a space key that looks like this: 611u387987bhc31187.
