My team needs to set up a reference dictionary within our Confluence deployment which would allow users to look up certain terms and find out what the definition is. Additionally, users will be able to see which words they should not be using.
Is there, perhaps, a plug in or other functionality that we could use for this?
Hi Jason,
The functionality you describe is not currently available within Confluence without using an add-on. While I cannot currently find any available to Confluence Cloud, users with Confluence Server may want to investigate 'Business Dictionary' on marketplace.atlassian.com
Cheers,
Paul
Hi Jason,
We use a Glossary plug-in from Atlassian Expert company, Brikit, that is pretty slick. The main page has an enlarged and prominent (approx. middle left on page) search box that shows hits as you type just like the main search, but only shows hits within the glossary space itself. Prior to launch, Brikit helped us upload thousands of terms we had in a previous tool; that previous tool lacked many things, most notably only one person could update the content so it was difficult to keep the content fresh and updated.
We just launched this spring and in the first month already had dozens of employees - many of who had never edited a wiki page before - who participated in adding or updating terms, contributing to the knowledge base. Of course, you can decide who has edit rights for your situation; we opened it up to all employees. So now with Confluence - versus the previous tool we had - we are able to use crowdsourcing to add and update terms, and have the added functionality that comes with Confluence such as comments, etc.
Some additional bits: The main page also displays a prominent tag cloud - we use it to curate selected terms under categories users can click on. The plugin also comes with an Index option which is also valued by some users. This is an alphabetical view of all terms, which allows users to conveniently click through the alphabet and look at terms available. We see this being helpful for employees to easily browse to find terms they may not be acquainted with, or to view variations of terms that can be hard to locate specifically via search (e.g. in our business, there can be a half-dozen perturbations of 'conduit'). If interested, contact Brikit and certainly feel free to follow up with me here or at tom.crespi@graybar.com. Tom
