I have a page a with a list of definitions in it. Ideally I am looking for following functionality:

Let's have first case, wherein the pages get listed having those 'definition'/'word'
You can have a automation that would run as when a page is published; to check if page content contains the definition (specified terms/syntax/text), then add a label to that page. (You may need to have if/else condition with all text to search).
And now in your original list page, have list of definition (Expand macro) macro to list all the pages (filter with label macro) based on labels. Only case here is, you have to maintain that lables automation and new label should be added to your original listing page.
For the HOVEN with definition - that's not possible with native functionality.
