There appears to be a very limited selection of available macros. So I ask, can i modify them somehow? ...Get into the code and fix them to better suit my needs? For example, the Content Report Table macro has a table and lines, but lacks the option to sort, whereas the Content by Label has sort, but no table and lines. Is there a way to go into the macro and edit it so that i can have a better product?

We can recommend to use the Table Filter and Charts for Confluence app to enhance standard Confluence macros.
Wrap your Content Report Table macro in the Table Filter macro and apply the default required sorting (for example, by Title alphabetically). After the page publishing, all the columns become sortable like in ordinary Confluence tables.
