Is there some way to upload a single image file and place it on multiple Confluence pages, so if at some point I update the image I only have to change it in once place and all the occurrences are updated?
I guess I could make it a user macro. Anything simpler than that?
Ah, OK. I can do Insert > FIles and Images > Search on other pages, find the image I want, and place it.
The standard "shriek for an image !" will do it
Upload your image to a page that everyone can read. Now go to the places you want to repeat the image and use the ! and use the "open other media" option. Select "search", and search for your uploaded image.
If you use that repeatedly, and then upload a new image, it'll change in all places.

I'm not sure what ! means there.

It means "insert image inline, here". MOst of the time, people will use it to render an image from a file that they've attached to the page (so it would be !image.png!) but you can do things like !www.somewhere.com/a-picture.jpg! and !<space><page><image name>! for a local link

If you attach an image to a page, you can reference this attachment from any page.

That gives me a link to the image. I want the image to appear inline.

Combine it with the "Insert files and images" (Ctrl+M) you find on the editor toolbar.
