Can tasks be assigned to a group instead of single users?

We are using a workaround for that. Our groups have e-mail adresses which are forwarded to the team members. So we added some group "dummy" user we can @ mention and then the user in that group are beeing notified. Not the most elegant solution but working. And this also makes it possible to share pages with groups.

No they cannot. Tasks can only be assigned via the @mention ability, which is limited to actual users.

Only if that "group" is a user in Confluence.  You're better off just @mentioning all the people you want on the line with the task so they get notified and can see it in their workbox.  Using a user account as a group also prevents you from getting the benefit of using Confluence as a collaboration tool.  If it's a really big group, share the page with the group and put in a message about the task.
