Cannot change Confluence Space Type ?

Iain May 28, 2025

I need to set my existing space to "global"  type in order to sync with a third party tool (the tool can only access spaces with global types.)

Three of my my existing spaces are visible to this tool as they are of type =global however the space I want to sync is type= "knowledge_base"

I can't find anywhere to change this?

Everything I find online says to set it in Space settings > Manage Space > Space Details but there is nothing there?
I've tried setting the category to "global" but this seems to have no effect.
Do I need to move all my content to a new space wit no category set to allow this?

Hi @Iain

As a workaround - you can create a new space as Custom and clone your existing space's content into it.

You can use a trial of an app that does that

  • Comala Publishing by Appfire
One-way synchronization between two spaces, integrates Appfire’s workflow apps.

  • Space Sync for Confluence by Ricksoft
Multi-directional synchronization of spaces across multiple Confluence sites, integrates with Ricksoft's Pages Manager.

  • Copy page tree by Appfire
Works great for a one-off copy and does work over the root/home page of the space

Then you can change the space keys (so that the new space has the same as the old one) and archive the original.

I know it's not the ideal scenario, and you may lose pages' histories, but there seems to be no easy way to convert the  existing space.

Hi Lain,

Welcome to Atlassian community!

In Confluence Cloud, there are two main types of spaces: Global spaces and Personal spacesGlobal spaces are areas where teams or projects collaborate and store content, while personal spaces are individual areas where users can store notes, work in progress, and drafts before sharing.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
1. Global Spaces:
  • These are shared spaces for teams, projects, or initiatives.
  • They are listed in the Space Directory and can be accessed by users with appropriate permissions.
  • Global spaces are designed for collaborative work, knowledge sharing, and information management.
2. Personal Spaces:
  • Each Confluence user has a personal space that is automatically created.
  • Personal spaces can be kept private or shared with individuals or teams.
  • They are suitable for individual notes, to-do lists, and draft content.
Additional Considerations:
  • Collaboration vs. Knowledge Base:
When creating a new space, Confluence Cloud offers two templates: Collaboration and Knowledge Base. Collaboration spaces are designed for team work, while Knowledge Base spaces are focused on sharing information.
  • Space Types (Categories):
While the main types are Global and Personal, you can further categorize spaces using labels or space types. This allows you to organize and find specific types of spaces more easily.
  • Team and Project Spaces:
Within global spaces, you can create team and project spaces to further organize your content based on teams and projects.
In confluence cloud you can update the space type which is also called as category as a knowledgebase, I have attached the screenshot below on how to update that from my test space:

Do let me know if that helps!.
    Best Regards,

Thanks @Vishalakshi Narayana Swamy for the update but that doesn't quite help.

My "Client Support" space , which is NOT a personal space is not appearing in the list of spaces that show here (I've checked and this is NOT an issue with the 3rdparty tool)

This list of spaces above happens to be the same list returned if I search for global spaces using the the REST API , so I have to assume that this global setting is the culprit ?

https://movingwallshub.atlassian.net/wiki/rest/api/space?limit=500&status=current&type=global

TypeGlobal.png

If I create a new space and select "Custom" as the purpose, it WILL appear in the above REST API  call and the 3rd party tool but I cannot seem to update my existing Customer support space so that it appears there too

NewSpace.png

Do you see my problem now?

How can I update my Client Support space to be global when it currently has "type":"knowledge_base" even though i have removed the knowledge base category from the space settings?

At this point I think I need to crate a new space and move all my existing contet there so I can access it via the 3rd party tool.

Hi @Iain and Welcome to the Community.

I may be mistaken here but I believe that 'global spaces' are a Data Center / Server thing and you are on Cloud.

Would you mind sharing the name of the third party tool. That may help to find a solution.

I'm trying to sync with intercom

https://www.intercom.com/help/en/articles/9454619-sync-or-import-internal-articles-from-external-sources#h_ed0ce3f6dc

I've checked and the only, spaces that show up in the intercom sync widget :

Widget.png

Are those of type : global  via the rest API
https://<hostname>.atlassian.net/wiki/rest/api/space?limit=500&status=current&type=global

TypeGlobal.png

So the issue IS with the type:global.

I can even create a new space with type:global by specifying  "custom" as the purpose when I create a new space

NewSpace.png

But before I move all our content to a new space I want to make sure that I can't update the type of the exiting space .
