Cannot create a space after Confluence upgrade to 6.14.0

We have upgraded Confluence from version 6.8.2 to version 6.14.0 - after the upgrade we are unable to create a Confluence space.

Error message: Unknown server error when trying to create a space

Some of the solutions have been to deactivated collaborative editing and delete specific tables on the database. Unfortunately these solutions did not resolve the issue.
