Comparing migration methods

Hi all, I am new to Confluence and trying to find my way around. I had a production installation in Win7 which I wanted to migrate to Windows Server.

I managed to do this by unzipping the Confluence ZIP installation file, setting the path to HOME folder, copying the old Confluence HOME folder to the new location, and finally migrating the postgre database, by making a new one and then restoring from the backed up one.

However, copying both the original Confluence installation and HOME folders and migrating the database also seemed to work.

My question is, are these two methods fundamentally different in any way? Does the Installation directory store any customized settings which are updated, depending on the system? Is it OK if I just copy the installation folder or am I going to mess up any settings (server IDs, folder location etc...)?

Hi!

Both ways should be OK if you didn't made any customizations after installation like changing port number for Confluence, memory tuning and so on by editing configuration files in the installation directory.
