Confluence 4 and no wiki markup - how to re-arrange / re-order rows in a large table?

Hi,

with wiki markup it was very ease to re-arrange / re-order rows in a table: switch to markup mode, copy to a power editor, doing some re-ordering / re-sorting based on some columns, paste back to Confluence - done.

But how to do it with Confluence 4 ...?

I did some test but did not figure out how (except the not acceptable way by cut and paste, even with CTRL-SHIFT-C/V).

This should work with drag & drop like the tasklist but with multiple selects (otherwise it could take tons of cut/paste until a table is re-arranged).

Hints and comments are more than welcome!

Hi,

We have made this easier to do with Confluence 4.0.5.

You can now copy and paste multiple rows. Simply use your mouse to select the desired rows, Ctrl + C, then paste - Confluence will no longer insert a nested table but paste into individual cells.

We're aware of this usuability issue for Wiki Markup users and are tracking the ability for users to cut/copy/paste multiple table rows in Confluence on this feature request which you may like to vote for and watch.

Any hope of giving us a "source code" editing view so that those of us who prefer plain text can just edit the XHTML source for stuff like this? Why make us jump through so many mouse-driven WYSIWYG hoops to achieve something so quickly and easily achieved in plain text mode?

@Brian – A lot of customers have asked us this and the the main reason we don’t to allow end-user editing of the raw markup is that the editor markup is not really XHTML. It is an XML dialect that looks like XHTML so that it can be edited in a browser, but that embeds a lot of important semantic information so we can turn it back into the storage format when you hit save. Please see Why We Removed the Wiki Markup Editor in Confluence 4.0 for further clarity on this decision.

For what it's worth, I've totally stopped using Confluence except when it's absolutely necessary. It's a shame, because when I could use markup I could really fly through my documentation. I've been in the process of moving my documents into markdown pages managed by revision control and served out a web browser. A huge step backwards in wiki, but at least I'm able to crank out the things I need.

FWIW... hope to see markup in Confluence sometime again!
