Confluence Max thread and SQL server Connection Pool

Mani Koodalingam September 8, 2014

Hi there

Confluene instance become very unstable since upgrade to version 5.5.2. I noticed the number of threads increases over 300 sometimes over 400 and Confluence fails on all browser. Thread dumps from the prvious instance shows that number of threads in BLOCKED state.

I've not capped the max threads in server.xml, but I increased database connection pool value to 220, still this has not made huge difference and still confluence goes down very frequently.

Confleunce runs on VM Windows 2008 R2 server with over 2000 users, but the concurrent usage may be less.

Last few days I noticed the number of live threads increases so quickly and Confluence dies.

How do we stop the thread peaks?

There is a slight increase in number of threads (around 15 to 20)  when its sync with Crowd, as per Atlassian the Crowd sync is expensive process and suggesting to avoid during production hours. I will try moving the sync schedule outside business hours and see if that helps.

Hi Mani, have you checked if Crowd Sync is running in the background when these problems occur? We've experienced very similar problems on Windows 2008 R2 and MSSQL Server when Crowd was synchronizing.
