We are currently using easy reader (v4.3.6) and this is not available when we upgrade to v5+.
The documentation theme gives the best range of options, but is it possible to replace the "page tree" text with button? At present, our side menu is manually created using images and we want to get away from that.
We are unable to use any theme builders or plug ins so would need the wiki markup if this is available for us to do.
I think you might mean making it look more like a menu, with button-like links. As Sean King says, all this need is custom CSS. The link below describes in detail how the custom CSS would look:

I'm working on replicating just the pagetree part of it. I've wrapped the pagetree in a div element, with a custom class. Then, I've defined the custom CSS for the class. You can specify borders and background gradients, which will make the individual links look like buttons.
You can add css to the space stylesheet to make the text links look like buttons. For example you can remove the list-style-type, add a border, padding, margin, and maybe a background color or gradient.
