The confluence sidebar of one of our spaces, is empty until I edit some content on the space.
I found some similar questions, but they are about self-hosted I think, while we are on the cloud version.

Actually, it's probably the same issue as on-prem. Your home page / root page settings may be messed up (it happens to the best of us).
Go to Space Settings > Content > Reorder:
As you can see, all my pages are under the Overview page with the Home icon next to it. All those pages are displayed in the tree.
When I click Overview, this is what I see:
(Notice, that on the left, it's the Space main icon (my personal space, that's highlighted blue)
And how to achieve that?
Space settings > General > Space details - scroll down and click More details. You see, that my Home content = Home page is set to Overview.
Which is the page
In other words the page that tops the hierarchy in the Reorder screenshot should be your home page.
(this mess typically occurs when one copies / moves content around between spaces - or when somebody gets creative with settings)
Anyway, compare the structure of your misbehaving space with other spaces that work as expected and you'll see exactly what you need to change.
