Export to PDF timeout workaround

I recently had a user who could not export to PDF without timing out (the final document was 244 pages long, so no surprise there). Increasing the timeout did not solve the issue, and while disabling the sandbox did prevent the timeout, the process still exceeded the session timeout. We cannot change the session timeout as per DOD policy, but I did find a clever work around (which is how I know it was 244 pages long) so I thought I'd share with the community.

Export to Word, the print the Word document to PDF.
