Can someone explain me the significance of External Links of Confluence Subspace plugin?

As I understand it, you can extend the SpaceNavigation for external links.
Lets say you have a corporate website and you want integrate a link into the navgation.

If you are just looking for a navgation / menu plugin, there are other solution in the marketplace.
