How do I avoid deadend links when deleting a page?

Mary Decker April 17, 2013

Hi,

I want to delete a Confluence page (since I'm moving the content to another page on the same topic), but first I want to check which pages link to the page I'm about to delete so that I can redirect the links to the other page and avoid the situation of links that go nowhere.

How do I do this?

Thanks,

Mary

If you go to Tools > Info, you'll see a list of the pages that link to this one (incoming links).

Another approach, which will help with links that (for example) link via URL rather than page name, is to keep the old page and put in a redirect.

Thank you! And if I see no list of incoming links, I guess that means there aren't any...?

How do you do a redirect? Is a macro plugin required?

If you see none there, that means there are no properly written links. If people have linked using URLs instead of page names, they won't show there.

For redirect, yes, it is in the Customware Redirection Plugin.

Thanks! I downloaded the plugin, but am not sure how to install it. It's a key file rather than an exe one. :-P

You need to install it via the plugin manager. Are you an admin of your wiki?

Mary Decker April 19, 2013

I'm not an admin. I realized that and have logged a ticket with the person who does have admin rights to get this done. Thanks for the help! I'm in a new role, so there's lots of learning... :)

You're welcome!

One more thing: If your site allows use of the HTML macro, you could use an HTML redirect. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5411538/how-to-redirect-from-html-page

Good to know. Thanks! :)
