I have just opened a new instance of Confluence, and there is a user "Sysadmin" <noreply@atlassian.com> that currently holds all the permissions to confluence-administrators and system-administrators. How do I get access to these groups and to this sysadmin account?

Is it onDemand or download? If it's onDemand you can't. Atlassian doesn't want people breaking onDemand instances.

Thanks Sean, it is OnDemand. Do I need to ask Atlassian to help me admin my system then? The noreply email makes me feel like it's a lost cause...It seems there are some permissions that only the confluence-admin and system-admin have that I need.

Correct. Here's a link to documentation on restricted functions and what Atlassian will change upon request: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AOD/Restricted+Functions+in+Atlassian+OnDemand
