How to restrict a space in a JIRA+Confluence OnDemand instance

A Confluence admin may wish to make a certain space, but not any other spaces visible to external users for example. Because the various permissions of each app in OnDemand play together this can be tricky because users may inherit permissions from a different permission schemes.

  • Create a restricted user
  • Grant this user application access to Confluence only
  • Create a restricted users group
  • Put the user in this group
  • Go to JIRA Global Permissions (shortcut is to hit gg and then type Global Permissions in the search field) and grant the permission "JIRA users", which will allow to log in, to the newly created restricted users group
  • Now check Global permissions in Confluence and ensure, the restricted user group "can use" Confluence, but not perform any of the other actions like for example create spaces if they should not be able to create content
  • Now check the Space Permission of the space you wish to grant the user access to. You can do this on an individual base, but you could also grant this permission to the whole group, so every user in this group would only see this space
