Several times I've by accidentally change the name of a file and it has updated an already added image. I didn't think the images remained connected to the file. Is this a setting? I would prefer them not to be connected.

@Laura Fox while you can't override what happens when change a filename, there is a better way to review and manage images including editing file names - Attachment Manager by Easy Apps.

  • search by page(s)
  • list of all attachments on a page
  • filter by attachment version
  • filter by if visible on a page
  • bulk download, delete, move
  • statistics

A suite of tools to manage attachments.

Hi @Laura Fox , welcome to the Atlassian Community!

When you upload the same image Confluence should display a warning about it:

This mechanism allows you to maintain a history of file changes - for example, if you’re working on a design that evolves with each iteration. Additionally, if only the attachment on a page needs to be updated, it will be replaced smoothly. You can also preview previous versions directly:

You can change the file name in attachment properties.
