Images as leaves in nested Expand macro: click on image link, then try to go back to expanded tree view; all expansions have collapsed

I have deeply nested expand macros. The leaves are links to images. When the user clicks on a link to the image, the image pops up. When the user tries to dispatch the image to the previous state of expansion, only the root is displayed.

I see no way to go back to the tree/expand view other than hitting the browser "back" button. When I do the previous expanded state of the view prior to clicking on the image is lost, and only the root is displayed.

Is there any way, when viewing the image, to get back to the state of expansion of the tree that was present before the user clicked in the image link?

Hello Chris, if I read you correctly that appears to be a markup limitation. Would it be possible to post the code excerpt, and also clarify a bit on the sentence the follows - "When the user tries to dispatch the image to the previous state of expansion, only the root is displayed."? Thanks!
