Peter,
We have an add-on that supports the whole Atlassian portefolio (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, Bamboo and FisheEye/Crucible)
You have the option to authenticate using Kerberos or SAML (or in combination) and there is no need for any modification on your applications.
We support SSO on JIRA mobile, service desk, auto user creation etc.
Have a look at https://marketplace.atlassian.com/search?query=kantega

Yes, if you want to use Atlassian's SAML add-on you have to have Data Center. I think that is a bit stingy myself. There are a few other options as well in the marketplace ... a couple are free.

Hello,
The announcement is this one ?
https://www.atlassian.com/blog/confluence/deployment-flexibility-single-sign-better-team-collaboration-confluence-6-1
SSO in Confluence is not an out of box functionality without Crowd, you need to write your own custom authenticator or use an existing :

But yes, with Confluence Data Center, there is a free add-on (by Atlassian) for SSO functionality :

No. There are several ways of doing SSO, and I don't believe that any of them are going away. What announcement are you looking at?

Ah, yes, that's been on the plan for a while. It's not "require DC for SSO", it's "adding SSO natively to DC, so you don't have to use one of the other non-native methods"
