It does not appear in the "add-ons".

Yes, it's available.
It might be not showing up, because in the dropdown menu, you need to click on All add-ons. By default it shows the installed/upgraded ones by us.

You're correct. Confluence 5.9 has its own viewer that is now embedded, so you don't need to have office connector's macro to view the file. But you need to have the office connector to actually edit the content.
