Is there a way to change the default settings when creating a new user?

I'm looking for a way to change the default settings for new users. I'd like to

• change the e-mail notification settings (so our companys recommendation is preset for new users)
• preset page/space watches for new users
• preset some favourites for new users

Does anyone know how this could be done without having to create a new user, then logging in as this new user and configuring the required settings?

We have the same issue here with Confluence 5.7.
There doesn't seem to be a way of doing such a modification through the UI.
 And we are reluctant to edit the source code (if we would find the suitable lines ...)
