Migrating Confluence 5.1.3 to 5.6.1 from one server to another.

Hi,

We have Confluence 5.1.3 on one server (Windows) and 5.6.1 on another server (Linux).  

I know I will need to backup DB and home directory.  When restoring them to 5.6.1 will the DB be upgraded automatically?  Also, will things like macros and plugins work, or do I need to do something specific.

Hi Ahmad, 

Before jumping to the standard procedures from an upgrade, we suggest the users to check the plugin compatibility with the next versions to avoid further issues. 

You don't have to worry about your database, with a full XML backup (please add the attaches in this backup), Confluence will do the magic, I mean, populate the new database, make everything right. So, you don't need to do a clone of your database.

Thank you Renato for your response. That definetly helps. Do you think there will be issues since we are moving from Windows to Linux since Linux is case sensitive. Not sure if it will break anything like certain attachments, etc... Anything you see that we should be aware of? Thank you again.

i dont think there will be an issue migrating from windows to linux. the paths in the basic configs are different, but the application itself runs within a jvm and as such the operating system isnt that critical. I have migrated also quite some systems, to get more confidence i suggest you try it in a test/sandbox environment first ;)

Thanks Frank! We will for sure be testing this. I just wanted to see if I can catch the issue ahead. Going back to what Renato stated about the DB. My understanding of doing a full XML backup is not recommended if the DB is large. I think ours is just under 20 GB. I think there is a migration utility if we are just going to upgrade the DB directly.

I'm glad that I could help you .

If you have a large DB, you are right about maybe a full XML backup might not be the best option. In this case, you can increase the JAVA memory from your Confluence, or try to migrate your Database using a dump database.
