Override notification email behavior

In Confluence 4.x Server we were able to provide our own implementation of notificationsSender to do some custom manipulation of email notifications for watched spaces. Trying to d the same thing in confluence 6.2 I see the constructor for our implementation is being called but no other methods are called when a page is changed and we do receive the existing email. I have tried both including the implementation in a plugin and in the classes directory and get the same results. What am I missing or do email notifications just work differently in 6.2?

Email notifications do indeed work differently in 6.x, at least that is the case for page updates.

Can you please point me to the documentation you have been using, so I make sure we amend it for new Confluence versions
