Any risks editing the CSS style sheets for one space?

Karen Clarke December 5, 2017

I am a technical writer for a development team in a large company. We have our own space within the overall company Confluence site.

The company style sheet is quite limited. There are no options for second level lists, list continue numbering, indented paragraphs in list items etc... All these style options I use in Word documents (and have used in other documentation tools) and are necessary for creating well-structured complex processes and procedures.

I know there is an option to edit the CSS for a space as well as the site. I am just looking for reassurance that if I request and am given permission to edit the CSS style sheet of my team's space, that ithere isn't any possibility of it having any effect on the company-wide site.

What should I take into consideration before requesting this permission from the company site's administrator?

Thanks,

Karen

Hi Karen,

You'll want to make sure you're only editing the space's stylesheet:

Styling Confluence with CSS

Make sure to follow these instructions for the space:

To edit a space's CSS style sheets:

  1. Go to the space and choose Space tools > Look and Feel from the bottom of the sidebar
  2. Choose Stylesheet then Edit.
  3. Paste your custom CSS into the text field.
  4. Save your changes. The new CSS will be visible on all content pages in the space.

This will not affect other spaces in the environment.

If there is already custom CSS listed, I would recommend that you make a copy of it somewhere in case you need to revert to it.

Let me know if you have any additional questions about that.

Regards,

Shannon
