Confluence Server - Zip Backups larger than 2 GB - are they safe or not

I am confused about some of the articles I read about Confluence backups bigger than 2 GB. They claim that Zips larger than 2 GB are not supported but my Confluence is creating them.

So, are daily zip backups (xml + attachments) of the entire Confluence resulting in the Zip archive larger than 2 GB safe or shall I just let Confluence backup xml and leave the attachments for tar/gzip script of of mine?

Hi Jiri,

The XML backups use resources from the Confluence application when they run, and they can be big unwieldy flat files, subject to corruption.

We have this informative doc on the subject: Production Backup Strategy:

Confluence automatic daily XML backup is suitable if you:

  • are evaluating Confluence
  • do not have database administration familiarity, and your Confluence installation is small

Once your Confluence installation reaches more than a few thousand pages, the XML backup facility can be inefficient compared to your database's own backup tools. The built in backup functionality requires a lot of memory to run and is less reliable when restoring data.

Thanks,

Ann
