Copy confluence data to Jira

Dear All,

Is there a smart/automated way to copy across part/section of a Confluence page into an existing Jira ticket?

Basically, the use that we have got is that a Jira epic exists and the teams want to copy across the Epic details from confluence to this existing Jira epic.

Also, worth noting that the client is in the process of migrating/moving over to cloud and I believe Jira & Confluence cloud are well connected, so after the migration, potentially a Jira ticket in the cloud can pull some Confluence data without having to physically copy the data across from Confluence into Jira?

Thanks in advance. Any help/pointers/ability to achieve this via REST API etc would be welcome

Regards,

Mit Tolia

Hi @Mit Tolia

I don't have a technical solution right now but some best practices:

The fact, that the Epic's description is already saved in Confluence is exactly how the Tools were originally intended to be used. Confluence is for anything that you need mid- to longterm. Jira is only short-term and should be used for task management rather than describing (Description as in concept, documentation etc.) whatever you're working on. My rule of thumb is, if you cannot delete any (or all) resolved Jira issues older than 1 year without loosing critical data, there is something wrong with how you use the tool.

Therefore, I would suggest using Links. You can link Confluence pages just like you can link Jira issues. Links can be repaired automatically after Migration to Cloud as well.

Hi @Rebekka Heilmann _viadee_ - I completely agree with you & am also of the same opinion... Will be double clicking more onto this specific use case & the need to copy data across over the coming days and even I am thinking of suggesting to just link Confluence pages...

This was more for me to explore, if technically this is even possible to achieve via APIs etc.?

You can edit issues per API if you have the issue key. For Confluence I am not sure how to get a page's content as I've not worked with the API much. There would always be Web page crawlers.

In Cloud, Confluence Automation has been introduced. So that might be worth looking into.
