How can users select multiple values from a list variable for a template?

We have a space template and I have set up a few variables for it. In one case, users should be able to select multiple values from the drop down – but this doesn't seem to work. Is there a way I can set this up in the template?

Unfortunately the default template/variables do not include a multi-select, only a single select.

I am poking around in add-ons to see if there's an alternative but I am not sure there is, within the Templating feature.
