How do I disable the auto generated table of contents on a page?

Andrew Pascarella October 28, 2022

Is it possible to disable the auto generated table of contents on a page or select a way that it is always hidden?

On some pages it creates unneeded clutter and depending on screen size makes viewing pages difficult.

Yes, so someone had enabled the "Easy heading Macro" app. I was basically getting complaints from users that on smaller screens like laptops using Confluence felt crowded and it was difficult to read pages unless you hid the floating TOC. You have to hide it EVERY time you open a page.

Hi @Andrew Pascarella ,

welcome to the Atlassian community!

Probably you are creating a page form a template that includes Table of Content macro.

Please modify the template (if you are a Confluence admin) or ask to a Confluence Admin to that for you.

Hope this helps,

Fabio

Hi @Andrew Pascarella - welcome to the community!

If there is a generated table of contents on a Confluence page, it is because there is a macro enabled. In Edit mode, click on the TOC and click the trash can to remove it. If this is not what you are asking about, please let me know and I'll try to help you further.

No I understand the TOC macro if I want to add one and also delete one. This is why it's so hard to find the answer, I've been trying to hit the right search terms.

On certain pages, there is a setting that auto generates a floating TOC, it can be hidden by clicking on it. It's fine for some of my Confluence pages, on other pages it makes viewing the content difficult. I'm getting complaints from my users and I would like to know how to turn it off and on. I can't seem to find the settings or information on it.  Screen Shot 2022-10-28 at 3.28.40 PM.png

Hey Andrew,

It looks like you might be using an app that’s inserting this table of contents.

That sounds like the culprit. I'm coming into an established wiki as an admin, so I'm trying to back track to what is doing this. Any idea what it might be called?
