How to link xls file in a Confluence page

Salvatore October 13, 2022

Hi.

I am struggling to link an xls file to a confluence page. I can do it trough a Excel Macro function, but in this case it will displace the table while I would like the link only. I am building a page which will include several links, so, I would need just a link with file name. Clicking it I would like to open the relate xls file in excel.

Thanks ! Salvo

Hi @Salvatore , welcome on the community :)

I'm afraid you can only add regular link to confluence page's attachment as described here: https://support.atlassian.com/confluence-cloud/docs/insert-links-and-anchors/

Hi Martin, thanks ! What a shame ! Actually I would need a link which point directly to the xls file since in the relative folder I have hundreds of files, so, as you can imagine it would be a big mess to simply link the folder..:) I need just a simple link to xls.

Thanks anyway !

You know Martin, using the Excel Macro I am able to open the original xls file, but I cannot reduce the spreadsheet to a simple text link. In fact if I click Edit it works, but I do not want visualize the spreadsheet below. Do you think there is some solution ? Capture.PNG

Hi @Salvatore , yes you can have a link, you need to go to Attachments page, right click on your attachment and copy the link to it. That's what I meant :)

HI Martin. Got it . So the only way is to firtsly import in Confluence all excel files and then I can link them. I see. The only concern is the space since I should import around 50 different xls files. I usually keep them in some share point. The ideal solution would have been a link pointing to the share drive, but, again does not work.

Ok Thanks I will import the files.

Hi @Salvatore I think the sharepoint file also has a link, so you can do it the same way. The only problem is, that link will probably lead to the sharepoint drive so you will need to do the two steps process

  • click the link and go to sharepoint
  • download the file on sharepoint

Maybe if you have SSO in your company and you are logged in to sharepoint in your browser, it might work in one step, but unfortunatelly I have only minimal experience with the sharepoint

Hi @Martin Bayer [MoroSystems, s.r.o.]

yes you are right. Actually if I link the xls file in share point , is does not work. I have to link the share point or local  folder and then pick the xls file I want.  Problem is that in this folder there many xls files , so, it would be a bit tricky to pick the right one. Moreover, I realized that if I link an xls file ( even stored in my local drive ) it works only if it has been  previously imported in Confluence . Bottom line is that I have to import the file in Confluence and then I can use the link feature. If I directly link an xls file without importing it does not work. Thanks again !
