I fixed this by changing my browser language from English (US) to English (GB) (or any other European language)

Thanks for your reply! This seems to have been an issue going back as far as 2012? All the solutions seems to be various hacks (by which I mean that they don't solve the actual problem) :-(
It seems you either have to change it for all calendars globally (not an option for me) or you have to install another language pack.
