In the new editor, how do I create a wiki link to another page like in the old editor?

Casey Graves May 13, 2019

In the new editor there is no longer the [ macro.  While in the editor for a page, I would like to link to another page in my wiki.  My understanding is that I should press / to open up the all-in-one macro menu and select link, search for my page, then select the page I'd like to link to.  Two problems with that:

  1. This pop up only searches through recently viewed pages in the wiki.  I have no way to do a search across the whole wiki for the page I want to link to.
  2. Once you've found the page and select it, the link that is created will open up a new tab/window when it's used instead of navigating to the new page in the same window.

How do I just make a plain old wiki page link like in the old editor that lets me select any page in the wiki and won't open up new windows when a user clicks it?

Hello Casey,

Thank you for showing this to me. I was able to replicate these behaviours on my instance, and I believe these to be potential bugs, so I have raised them below.

  • CONFCLOUD-66569 Unable to link to internal pages which have not been previously viewed
  • CONFCLOUD-66570 Opening block Smart Card Link opens in new tab or window

Please click This affects my team for both. This will help us keep track of the prevalence of these issues, as well as to add you to the watchlist and let you know you when there are any updates.

If you find anything like this in the future, you can send the feedback directly to the development team by clicking Send Feedback from your avatar menu:

For a workaround in the meantime, you'll need to visit the page first, or have someone send you the URL to the page which you can then paste directly into your editor.

Please let me know if you have any questions about any of this.

Regards,

Shannon

Thanks!  I'll use that feedback option next time.  I actually looked for it in the wrong menu, I thought it would be in the question mark ( ? ) menu.

Related, when you click on the Early Access Program link in the send feedback window it appears that the website is down (https://author.marketing.internal.atlassian.com/wac/software/confluence/premium)

Casey,

Thank you for that feedback. I'd bet if you expected it to be in the question mark menu, then there are lots of other customers who thought the same thing, so this is definitely something you can mention when sending feedback.

As for the Early Access Program, the link appears to be loading for me at this time. Can you confirm you are also able to access it now? Apologies for any trouble you had with that site earlier. I'm not aware of any downtime but I do know that we were having issues with our documentation site so it could be related.

Regards,

Shannon

Still down for me, is this an internal Atlassian URI?  This is the error I get from Chrome

author.marketing.internal.atlassian.com’s server IP address could not be found.

That ".internal" part sounds like it might not be a public link?  Here are the results from a DNS lookup

Casey,

You're right, my apologies.

Could you show me exactly where in the window you clicked the Early Access Program link? I'm attempting to replicate it on my instance to see what URL I get, but I am not able to find that menu item now.

Regards,

Shannon

Thank you, Casey!

For some reason that link wasn't appearing on the bottom of my window in my Confluence instance.

I was able to replicate it in another instance now, and I am working on reporting that as a bug to the appropriate team.

I was able to obtain the link where it should be pointing which is as follows:

https://www.atlassian.com/software/confluence/premium

Please feel free to sign up there for early access.

I'll let you know here when I have reported the bug.

Thank you for your patience!

Regards,

Shannon

Hello Casey,

I wanted to follow-up with you on a few of the issues reported here.

  1. We have a resolution for the issue where the link is opening in a new window. The fix should be out very soon, so keep an eye out for that.
  2. For the issue where you are not able to link to pages unless you have viewed them previously - we are co-operating with the editor team and working on improving search. This will take a bit more time, so please make sure to follow along on the ticket (CONFCLOUD-66569) for any updates once it is resolved.
  3. For the issue regarding the feedback window not linking to the public Confluence Premium page, I have reported this to the appropriate team and they are already on it! So thank you again for reporting that.

Let me know if you have any questions about any of this, or if you notice any other issues, and I'll be happy to step in.

Regards,

Shannon

Thanks for the update Shannon :)  The first fix will be helpful so that our team can start to use the new method for creating links to recently viewed pages.  It's a much better flow and mimics the old "bracket & type" feeling of the old editor.  Seems like the most natural way to make a link is now "Ctrl-K & type".  Once we're able to search the entire wiki in the auto-complete box Confluence will be in a good place, I feel, to create wiki links easily while editing "in the moment" and promote better connectivity between wiki pages.

I've used the feedback to provide additional information back to the Atlassian team, hope it helps :)  Fabric is definitely a step in the right direct but it hasn't quite reached parity with the old editor yet, almost there though :)

Casey,

No problem at all! Happy to be able to provide one to you.

Thank you again for sending the feedback via the instance, it definitely helps.

Take care, and have a pleasant weekend.

Regards,
Shannon
