Issues since update to version 7

Rhiannon McKenzie September 26, 2021

Hello,

I upgraded to 7.13 recently from version 5 as there was a vulnerability which needed the updated.

Since then, Confluence has stopped working. Was unable to start the service "Atlassian Confluence.0 Confluence" until I changed the Tom Cat version in the registry to version 9.

Now the error I am getting this a HTTP Status 500 -Internal Server Error.

Message: An exception occurred processing [errors.jsp] at line [13]

What am I missing? The account that should be accessing confluence seems to have full permissions to the folder that it is in.

Thank you for your time.

Kind Regards,

Rhiannon

Hi @Rhiannon McKenzie

Unfortunately, it’s hard to say what went wrong here and I’ll recommend a rollback if this was done on your production instance. (Hopefully you took a backup prior).

Now as for how to upgrade, I will suggest alway checking the:

  • Upgrade notes for each version
  • Consider a staged upgrade (don’t go directly from 5 to 7 but rather go to say 5 to 6 to 7 depending on what the upgrade notes recommend)
  • Most importantly, please read the supported platforms page for the versions you will upgrade to. For example tomcat, a database version or even Java version could stop being supported and lead to unexpected bugs.

I am aware this may not be the answer you were hoping for, however, I have to little to go with from what you shared and also there are too many potential variables at times that could lead to the error.

Lastly, copy the latest log entry from Catalina.out and your atlassian-confluence.log file especially where the error occurred as this hints what could be the issue.

Regards

Hi Ismael,

I have rolled back. Thank you for your suggestion, I will do it in stages next time I try.

Just to check, if Confluence connects to the database the is on another server, would the upgrade to version 7 do any changes to the database configuration?

Just wondering if I need to roll back the database too.

Thank you for your time.

Kind Regards,

Hi @Rhiannon McKenzie ,

Following the upgrade, yes there are upgrades to the database as well.

I will also rollback my database, however, may I ask how you rolled back your implementation? If you restored a backup from before the upgrade then this should already fix your database as well. Else you will need to restore the database.

My worry is that there may be data that your Confluence 5 may not understand.

Regards.

Hi Ismael,

Yes, we rolled back to an earlier version of the server.

Confluence does seem to be working again.

Thank you for your time.

Kind Regards,

Rhiannon
