Migrating / Update Confluence 6.2 to latest version

Hi, I need perform both an upgrade and migration of our Confluence & Jira environments.

The previous admin has left and whilst I have his docs for prior upgrades stored in Confluence I am new to it and welcome some direction.

We need migrate Confluence from one, on prem data centre to another (probably) Azure data centre. 

Atlassian advise I can move from 6.2 direct to latest version (6.15?) and I am thinking best methodology would be to install afresh the latest version on target server and then export/import the 6.2 database thus avoiding angst of performing an upgrade.

I would need install Jira too, hopefully using same method but would welcome advice on both strategies as appreciate there may be database changes that prevent the export/import.

We also use NGINX as advised by Atlassian.

I would suggest doing the upgrade first and then Migrating.  When you migrate you have to migrate to the same version.  If you are moving to Azure Data Center depending on your environment you might be able to take an image of the server and just stand it up on the azure, adjust dns and firewalls to ensure you have connectivity.

Brandt, thank you I will give those a read through.  Just had a 2nd reply from Atlassian to the query I posted and it's getting a bit painful to get a direct answer from them so maybe community can help.

As above I am considering install afresh and then export/import database from current version which they said yes I could definitely do but in same breath they provide this link [https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/restoring-a-site-152034.html] in which it says within "Before you start" section that export/import is not recommended!  Which is it.!
