Missing some images after Word export

Jérôme Leclère February 27, 2023

In a nutshell, I have some PNG images in a Confluence page that are missing in the Word document when exporting to Word.
It's not related to the number of images in the Confluence page as mentioned here for example since I have just a few.

To give some more details, I created some PNG images with a software (MATLAB) and tested different resolutions in dot per inch (150, 200, 300 and 400 dpi) to check what's the best compromise. All the pictures are shown properly in the Confluence page, but to my surprise when exporting to Word some of the pictures (150 dpi and 200 dpi, of size about 6600×1500 and 8810×2000 to give an idea) are not shown in the Word document.

I tried to change the place of the pictures in the Confluence page, but it's always the same pictures that are not shown in the Word document.

I opened the two problematic PNG files with Paint and save them without touching the pictures. Then I inserted these pictures in the Confluence page and they are shown properly in the Word document. So I was doubting the initial software (MATLAB), since this test shows that it is not the size in pixel that is problematic, but maybe something in the encoding (but then it is not clear why it affects some images and not others).

I tried to modify the size of the diagram is saved from the initial software (MATLAB), testing 3 different sizes and the same dpi resolutions as above, and they all show up in the Word document.

So it is quite difficult to understand where the problem is coming from.
Do you have any idea what can be the problem, or what could I try more to isolate the issue?

The issue was because the line with the picture was in monospace format, and there is known bug with the Scroll Word Exporter plugin: https://k15t.jira.com/browse/EXP-3505.

Hey @Jérôme Leclère  and welcome,

are your file been saved as PNG from Matlab? It is weird that situation. Try to raise a ticket https://support.atlassian.com/contact/

Hi Fabio,

Yes, I use the MATLAB function print to save Simulink models into PNG files.

I forgot to mention it, but these pictures are shown properly in a Word document if I insert them directly in Word.

While I wanted to create a minimum working example, I did many tests and observed that the issue is likely not with the picture itself but with Confluence.

When creating a new Confluence page and uploading the same PNG file, everything works well, it appears in the Word document.

When copying the initial Confluence page, the problem is still there. Then, on this page copied, I downloaded the PNG file, renamed it and reuploaded it, and inserted it at different places in the page, and in the Word document it appears in some places but he does not appear on other places.

I reduced the page to the minimum, with just two times the same picture, where one appears in Word and the other does not. If I switch their place in Confluence, it is the same picture that does not appear in Word, so it is not because of their placement.

So this is clearly a bug in Confluence, because when pointing to the same file attached to the page, sometimes the picture appears in the Word document, and sometimes not. But I was not able to reproduce the issue with another picture. I will raise a ticket.

@Jérôme Leclère What was the ticket raised for this? I am having the same issue - was it resolved in the separate ticket?
