Search does not work

Roel Van Zeebroeck April 25, 2019

When I search for something in the search box, nothing happens.

All the health checks are ok.

I have rebuilt the index (from scratch), but to no avail.

In the console (F12 in chrome), I see the following two errors:

Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 500 ()
2batch.js?locale=en-US:641 fail to load confluence-search-ui-plugin-main

Hello there Roel!

Upon reading your issue description, it seems that Confluence Native Search is not working as intended. Is that correct?

Since this is likely pointing to issues with the Confluence search plugin, we could start by Enabling Safe mode and trying out the search feature again:

  1.  Click cog icon > Add-ons
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page
  3. Click Enter safe mode
  4. Proceed to enter safe mode

The safe mode will disable all user installed addons. So it might be a good idea to schedule a downtime for this.

So, while Safe Mode is enabled all the addons installed by users will be unavailable for use. During this time, we should try to use the search feature again.

Now, if this yields no results we can try to clear the plugins cache:

  1. Shutdown Confluence
    1. Make sure that the process is not running
  2.  You can check that with ps -aux | grep confluence in Linux and via the Process manager in Windows
  3. Go to <confluence-home>
  4. Remove the following folders:
    1. <confluence-home>/bundled-plugins
    2. <confluence-home>/plugins-cache
    3. <confluence-home>/plugins-osgi-cache
    4. <confluence-home>/plugins-temp
    5. <confluence-home>/bundled-plugins_language
    6. Start Confluence
    7. Wait for the instance to start up again
      1. This might take some time due to the rebuild of caches
  5. Check if the feature works again

Now, I would like to have some clarification on a few points. Here they are:

  1. Was there any kind of addon installed prior to this issue?
  2. Is this happening with any browser?
  3. When was the first time that you faced this issue?

Looking forward to your reply Roel!

Hi Diego,

Thanks for your answer.

I did all the steps you said, but it is still not working. Note that we are a small start-up business (only two developers atm), so we have the luxury of having some downtime. Also, the amount of content is pretty small (about 20 to 30 pages in total I think)

Now, to answer your questions:

  • Was there any kind of addon installed prior to this issue?
    • No.
  • Is this happening with any browser?
    • Yes, I tested with Chrome, Firefox and Safari
  • When was the first time that you faced this issue?
    • After I updated from version 5.5.3 to version 6.15.1

There's something else I have to mention: apparently, I have created the same issue two times (by accident). I wasn't aware of this. Here's the other one: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/Search-does-not-work/qaq-p/1047283?utm_source=atlcomm&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=immediate_general_answer&utm_content=topic. Note that there's not a lot of response on the other issue. I posted some interesting logs there a week ago. I think they point to the issue.
