I'm afraid you need to look at the application log (It should be <confluence home>/logs/atlassian-confluence.log ) to see what the underlying error is.  Do you have access to that?

I don't currently, but I could dig it up.  At a cursory glance, what could be a good guess for this error's cause?

Almost any system error that might cause the back-end to be slow or disconnect during an operation.  I'm afraid the error you see here could be used for almost any back-end error, we really do need to look at the logs!
