Upgrade and migration of Confluence version 5.1.3

Hans Vangansbeke May 19, 2017

Hello all,

Since noone replied on my previous post, I'm relaunching my question.  Any help would be much apreciated.

We are planning on upgrading and migrating our version of Confluence but I'm not sure of the path I should follow.

Currently we have version 5.1.3 instaled on a Windows 7 pc.  The database is a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (version  09.00.1406).  We are planning to migrate to windows server (2012 or 2016) and Microsoft SQL Server 2014 (as 2016 is not (yet) supported).

I'm thinking of installing a clean version of the latest Confluence version in the new environment and then trying to import the data from the old version.  Is this the correct way to go ?  Any sugestions are more than welcome.  Thanks !

Best Regards,
Hans

Hi Hans, I am sorry to hear your previous posting was neglected. I will do my best to answer all your questions going forward.

My recommendation is to:

  • move the old version to the new hardware and OS, (following Migrating Confluence Between Servers
  • make sure it runs as expected,
  • upgrade the database to Microsoft SQL Server 2014
  • upgrade Confluence using the method in Upgrading Confluence  to upgrade. Please note that the doc says "XML backups should not be used to upgrade Confluence."

Hi Ann.  Thanks a lot for your answer, but as we don't have any experience with the upgrade/migrate process and as we don't want to take any risks, we decided to contact an Atlassian solution partner in Belgium to help us with this project.
