When I create a Confluence space from the software-project blueprint, it makes me specify a JIRA project.
What's the point of this?
I've looked through the space admin features and don't see anywhere that the information is stored.
It doesn't seem to set any defaults for JIRA related macros.
I understand that the blueprint provides default pages and page templates. I just don't see the point of specifying a JIRA project, as it seems to not be recorded or have impact on the pages in the space.
Hey Trudy,
I totally get your frustration with the Confluence software-project space blueprint and the seemingly mysterious requirement to specify a JIRA project. It can be a bit confusing at first, but let me shed some light on it.
The whole idea behind linking a JIRA project to a Confluence space is to foster better integration between Confluence and JIRA, which are often used together in software development projects. When you specify a JIRA project, it's like setting a bridge between the two platforms.
The benefits might not be immediately obvious, but it can streamline your workflow later on. Believe me, when I first tried this, it also seemed awkward and even unnecessary...I was working on a project at Andersen at the time and their development team suggested we work with this service. And guess what? It was annoying at first, but then I started to realize how convenient and practical it could be in teamwork. For instance, it can help you:
1. Link Relevant Issues: You can link JIRA issues directly to Confluence pages, making it easy to track progress and reference important tasks.
2. Embed JIRA Content: You can embed JIRA queries and reports directly into Confluence pages, keeping everyone in the loop about project updates.
3. Streamline Communication: It can facilitate communication between team members by providing a common context.
In my experience, this integration becomes more valuable as the project progresses. So, while it might seem unnecessary initially, it can be a game-changer as your project grows. Give it a chance, and you'll likely find it quite handy.
Hi Trudy,
From Create a space from a template:
Software project space
This space is designed to help you organize your software project. The purpose-built space home page lets you view and edit your roadmap, see team members, and Use Jira applications and Confluence together. Create pages in this space for requirements, meeting notes, decisions, retros, and more.
The software project space blueprint will only appear if you have linked Confluence to your Jira Software instance.
I hope that's clear! In short, you need to specify a Jira project because it's a space created to help organize your Jira software project.
Let me know if you have any questions about that.

Shannon

Hello Shannon,
I already read that documentation. It is clear as far as it goes, but it does not address my question. The documentations provides no details about how the project information is actually used.
When JIRA macros are used in such a space, the macros don't appear to default to filtering for the project. None of the JIRA macros used in such a space appear to leverage the project information that must be entered when the space is created.
I can't find the project information specified anywhere in the information available to a space admin, so it can't be changed or removed if needed.

Hi Trudy,
A blueprint is a set of page templates, so if you were to create a new page and link to a Jira issues macro, or add a Jira issues macro to an existing page, it wouldn't automatically link to the project. This is because what you are adding is new and is not part of the original page template.
In order to see which project is linked to a Confluence space, you can go to Space Settings > Integrations > Application Links. Here it will show you the project that is linked to your space.
When you create a space using the Jira Software project blueprint, it will add a link in the Space Shortcuts, and create a default overview page that includes information about your project.
Another feature is when you complete a Sprint, for example, Jira will pop up a screen to create the retrospective. It will link over to Confluence, and drop it in your space that you just created.
Have a look at the following for more details:

Hi Vasiliy,
You cannot edit the blueprint itself, but you can modify the templates within the blueprint:
Let me know if you have any questions about that.
