The announcement about the "Spaces now have owners"
Atlassian Cloud changes Mar 3 to Mar 10, 2025 | Atlassian Cloud | Atlassian Documentation
does not provide a link to the difference between a "Space Owner" and a user with "Space Administration" privileges. Where can I find out more information about what the difference is?
Context: A space did not have a user designated as a "Space Administrator". The user did have "Space Administration" privileges. The user was unable to change the Space name in the Details page until after I put the user's name into the "Space Owner" field.
I think @Barbara Szczesniak is right about the difference between "Space Owner" and "Space admin" from an Atlassian perspective. It's mostly only a difference in permissions.
However, the Confluence document management app Breeze also provides its own "Space Owner" feature. Here, space and page ownership are used to determine responsibility when users take part in page review and/or approval workflows.
So, when advanced document management, including review or approval workflows, is your use case, you might give Breeze a try or schedule a personal demo with me.
All the best,
Adrian from B1NARY (we are the developers of Breeze)
@Paula Hidalgo The item in the release notes includes:
Space owners or anyone in a group assigned as space owner are granted all permissions on a space.
I think this is the difference—a user with admin permissions for the space might not have other permissions, like deleting attachments or archiving pages.
I can't find a documentation page or community article about this new feature/field on the Space Details page, but maybe someone else can provide more information.

By default the "Space Owner" is NULL when this new feature was introduced on our site. One of the users with all space permissions (including Space Admin) was unable to change the Space Name on the Space Details without my adding that user as the Space owner. (I am a Confluence Administrator.)
I am interested in finding out who has the ability to update the "Space Owner". Is it only a Confluence Admin?
